The renovation and addition at United South End Settlements (USES) unifies new construction with three historic properties significant to the South End Community. The outdoor space will be the future play environment for the early childhood education center, after-school and a summer camp program for USES. The yard is designed as a flexible, open-ended nature play space with open turf fields, an outdoor amphitheater, rock scramble, embankment slide, and sand and water play designed to serve the play needs of infants to pre-teens. The landscape pays homage to the formal qualities of the architecture, particularly the Children's Art Center, a neoclassical building with a stunning facade which is also the backdrop for community and formal gatherings when school is not in session. New site interventions will create a fully accessible facility while respecting the historic character of the existing buildings.
